Facilitation Skills

By Belinda Clemmesen, B.Sc., M. Ed of Clemmensen Consulting

Overview:

To Facilitate means to make things easier (from the French, facile, meaning easy). So our job as facilitators is to make learning and development easier for our clients. We're there to create the process, the space, and the tone for this to take place. This workshop explores adult learning principles and key facilitator skills and techniques. Because so much of facilitating is an expression of the person you are, we also spend time examining our own values and beliefs as they relate to facilitation and working with groups.

Length:

1 to 1.5 Days

Format:

  • Theoretical Models
  • Personal visioning
  • Case Studies
  • Experiential Activities
  • Role plays
  • Group Discussions
  • Reflective processes

Key Learning Points:

  • Development and articulation facilitation skills.
  • Understanding of how facilitation skills are supported by good adult learning principles and effective training structure.
  • Understanding the difference between facilitation, training and presenting.
  • Development of the ability to ask insightful questions.
  • An opportunity to practice facilitation and receive feedback.
  • Building of self-awareness as a facilitator.
  • Creation of action plans for future learning and development.

Customizable Points:

  • Consultation with clients is a necessary and integral part of the final design process, all components of the program are adaptable to meet individual needs.
  • Group discussions, case studies and experiential activities can all be customized to address specific concerns and objectives for specific clients.

Additional Information:

  • This program is not a band-aid solution, it will require participants to reflect on their own behaviours and attitudes as well as understanding that as people, we all need to keep developing from whatever starting point we find ourselves at.
  • This is a learning and skills development program.
  • I recommend delivering this program over  a day and a half. One day to deliver the program, and assign on going "homework". And then a follow up half day in a couple of months to reinforce the learning and trouble-shoot based on application of the concepts.
